King Arthur Ads

December 30, 2004

I’m a little surprised by the advertising campaign for the DVD release of King Arthur. While I realize that it’s common for studios to use music from other popular movies during the initial advertising for a film’s theatrical run (in theory because the score of the movie might not yet be finished at the time of the production of the trailer), I don’t think I’ve ever seen it done for a DVD release. I was more than a little surprised to hear music that sounded suspiciously like the score of the Lord Of The Rings movies playing in the background during shots of King Arthur’s battle sequences. While I’ll admit that King Arthur wasn’t a bad movie, it certainly wasn’t up to the standards of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. And most certainly its battles were not in the same league as those in Return Of The King. Is using the LOTR score clever advertising or just a cheap ploy to try to rope LOTR fans into taking a chance on this DVD? I vote for the later.
